The best Medicare
supplement insurance should provide coverage specific to your needs at
an affordable price. There is a wide variety of Medicare supplements for
individuals from many different providers of Medicare supplement
insurance.
Your choices for
Medicare supplemental insurance involve two different types of plans;
both types of coverage offer additional insurance.
•Medicare Advantage
(formerly known as Medicare Part C)
•Medigap
Medicare
Supplements (Medigap) and Medicare Advantage Plans
A
Side-by-side Comparison
You can choose the
plan that is best suited to your needs. These policies will help cover
costs not paid by Medicare Part A and Part B such as deductibles,
co-payments and coinsurance. If you choose a more comprehensive Medicare
Advantage or Medigap plan -- you will get some coverage for prescription
drugs, vision and/or dental.
Medicare Advantage
(formerly known as Medicare Part C or Medicare+Choice):
Medicare Advantage
is privately sold insurance that is government subsidized and meant to
supplement the benefits of Medicare Part A and B. In fact, you must be
enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B to purchase Medicare
Advantage insurance.
Costs of these plans
will vary greatly because it is the individual company which determines
the fees -- not the government. However, all plans will require that
you be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B and that you
pay your Medicare Part B premiums.
Coverage Options and
Dependencies for Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage
plans vary greatly. Your choices will depend on where you live, but some
of the variables include:
•Most plans are
managed-care plans (HMOs) however, fee-for-service plans are available
in some areas
•Some plans -- but
not all -- will provide supplemental prescription drug coverage
•Some plans -- but
not all -- will provide supplemental vision care
•Some plans -- but
not all -- will provide supplemental dental care
Part D is not
available for Medicare Advantage.
MediGap
Insurance:
Your other option
for supplementing the benefits of Medicare Part A and B is a MediGap
insurance policy.
Coverage Options and
Dependencies for Medigap Insurance
Medigap insurance
policies are standardized and you have 10 levels of coverage to choose
among.
Medigap insurance
plans and their costs will vary depending on where you live.
Part D is not
included in MediGap but is available as an option.
If you decide not to
join a Medicare drug plan when you’re first eligible, and you don’t have
other creditable prescription drug coverage, or you don’t get Extra Help
(for low income families), you’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty.
Medicare Part D
Plan:
To get Medicare
prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D), you must join a plan run
by an insurance company or other private company approved by Medicare.
Each plan can vary in cost and drugs covered.
When choosing a
Medicare part D plan, it’s important to find out if your drugs are
covered and how much they will cost. Each of these plans covers
thousands of brand-name drugs and generic prescriptions drugs. To make
sure yours are included and to get a personalized quote for plan, take
the following steps.
1.
Make a list of
your current drugs and pharmacies.
2.
Talk to your
agent to make sure your drugs are covered
3.
Choose the
plan that best fits your drug needs.
Again, only those
already enrolled in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B can purchase a
Medigap or Medicare Advantage policy. Anyone 65 should sign on during
the six-month open enrollment period immediately following your
enrollment in Medicare Part B.
Unlike Medigap insurance policies, Medicare Advantage policies are not
standardized -- making comparison of plans difficult and time
consuming. At Landeche Insurance a New Orleans insurance agency, we can
help you compare these plans to save you time.
Landeche Insurance is authorized to offer
